Visa

Usually Austrians receive a Short Stay Visitor Visa for vacations till three months without problems. Often you can get this visa at the travel agency when you book the flight. But of course you can apply for the visa yourself too.

We applied for a Long Stay Visitor Visa for one year. Therefor we needed a valid passport, a proof over sufficient funds (e.g. account statements, account books), a short description of our travel route, an explanatory statement for the long stay and the filled form 48 (you can get it at their website). The costs for the visa are € 40,-- (2002) and the dismissal can last several weeks. Thus make the apply early enough!

Unfortunately we just got a visa for only half a year. But normally it is no problem to extend it to a year visa in Australia (in our case in Perth). We just had to do the whole paperwork again and pay 190 dollars per person. A further prolongation would not have been possible anymore.

There are of course many other kinds of visa (Job visa, ...). A more precisly overview and the forms and information you need, you can get on the website of the Australian Embassy in Austria.
