FoodMost of the time we bought our eating in the big, cheap supermarkets (eg. Woolworths, Coles) which also exist in many smaller towns (for example with 5000 habitants). It would also be possible to buy foodstuffs at the roadhouses so that one does not have to carry so much weight on the bike but there it is normally much more expensive and it is also uncertain what the roadhouse offers. Our nutrition wasn´t really diversified because for us it was important that the food was light, small in size, easy to cook (and without waste of water) and durable. Because of this reasons our breakfast mostly consisted out of cereals with milkpowder and water, for lunch we had instant noodles with a powder which becomes a sauce by cooking (e.g. the brands Continental and San Remo taste good), and for dessert some chocolate which was melted most of the time but still tasty (e.g. funsize packets of twix, mars,... because there is no mess when they are melted and most of the other chocolate brands we didn´t like anyway - Austrian and Swiss chocolates are still the best!). For dinner we mostly had noodles or soup again - or vanilla sauce which also helps against hunger and tastes delicious. Afterwards we often ate chips because we always had the need for salty things and they are light and easy to carry outside of the panniers. Especially at shorter distances we had some fruit or vegetables with us which however are heavy and not very durable but certainly good for the health. Always when we came to towns we ate things which have to be stored in a fridge or freezer like meat, fish, ice cream,...- which tasted terrific after the noodles everyday. By the way there are BBQ (Barbecue) areas in nearly every town. They work with electricity, gas or wood and are often free of charge. ![]() Barbecue areas are nearly everywhere! If somebody doesn´t like to cook oneself, there are restaurants, pubs, hotels and take aways in towns. Also at roadhouses you can get ready cooked meals. The Australian cuisine isn´t really famous - popular are steaks and sausages, but there are also many Asian restaurants too. In the big cities there are also special food centres where many small food stalls are at one place. Here you´ll find a great selection of different meals. ![]() Seafood is popular especially with tourists We mostly only went to restaurants when there was "all you can eat" (very often in Pizza Hut and chinese restaurants), because it was cheap, good and we had no hunger afterwards anymore. Although we sometimes were the topic of conversation in the restaurants - but bikers are really, really hungry! Something typical Australian is the very healthy Vegemite. Australians eat this spread already when they are small children and for me this is the only explanation why they like it ! |
