Thorns

Presumably the most important utilities for cycling in Australia are a tyre repair set and a good bicycle tyre inflator, because in some regions it seemed to teem with thorns. As long as you remain on the street, everything is ok. But as soon as you want to make a rest and leave the asphalt without exactly inspecting the ground, the break might end in patching flat tyres. The ground was often fully of stingers, which often had three spikes - so that they always pierce the tyres no matter how they are lying. And the stings are not only destructive for the tyres but of course for the tent ground, etc. too.

Patching tyres was at the daily agenda ...

... from morning until evening

Our worst record was when we once searched for a tent place in the dark: about 80 stings per tire - we needed at least one hour until we had removed these from the outer tubes and could eliminate the damage. Therefor it is always good to have some inner tubes in reserve, because in this case patching would not have made it anymore.

Once again a tyre full of thorns
