Railway

The expansion of the railway from Alice Springs to Darwin was during our stay near completion. Then it is possible not only to travel through south and east, but also to the north, however, more on this issue you can find on the website of the Australian Railway Corporation.

Bus

A good alternative to the railroad, because the bus network is much denser. With the big bus companies Greyhound and Mc Cafferty's you can travel around the continent and right through too. By the way on popular routes it is advisable to pre-book your ride, else you need to allow extra idle-time (e.g. in Byron Bay we truly felt sympathy for the Backpackers - it was a real fight to get into the bus). A problem is that big pieces of luggage like bikes are not always accepted.

There are many smaller, regional bus companies too which sometimes can be less expensive.

Mostly the bigger buses only go to the cities. To reach the more famous sights outside the cities you can use the smaller regional buses.

Airplane

Due to the size of the continent many are using planes for longer distances. The domestic flight net has been made well available with 444 airports (Source: CIA Factbook, 2002). In addition to well-known airline providers like Quantas and Virgin Blue there are several regional airlines which fly into remote areas too.
