Snakes
Three quarters of the Australian snake kinds are poisonous. 14 of the 20 most poisonous snakes worldwide live here (e.g. Taipan, Death Adder, Black Snake, ...). Nevertheless many Australia visitors do not see any snake, because most of them are very shy and flee as soon as they feel the vibration of steps (in areas with natural cover always stamp around firmly and control fire wood before picking it up, because a snake might hide itself). While camping you should always close the tent (a mosquito net is necessary in any case too) and pay attention if you fetch things from the Vorzelt?, because snakes search for the heat and sometimes they even hole up in shoes, under bags, ... - Thus keep your eyes open!Compact, ankle-high shoes and long trousers already keep away the greatest part of the snake poison by the way.
If you are bitten by a snake nonetheless, you should bear in mind how the snake looks (if possible without danger take the snake with you), because this way it is easier to determine the antidote. And then of course, as quickly as possible to the doctor, panic and unnecessary movements should be avoided, because so the poison can get faster in the blood circulation. We read about different kinds of first aid. Mostly it is recommended to use a compression bandage above the affected hinge and a splint to stay calmly. It is not recommended to suck the bite wound, because if the helper has for example a small wound in the mouth the poison can get into his body and endager him too. Furthermore the poison in the wound itself can help to determine an antidote.
We had some encounters with snakes, however, fortunately never while camping. Mostly we run across them during cycling, while they bask on the street. We often thought that they were just a stick or part of a frazzled car tire lying around copious. Snakes do not feel any vibration with bikes. Hence they did not move until we almost ran over them. However, somehow we always managed it in time to hoik our feets and avoid them.
