EmusAlong with the kangaroo the emu is the heraldic animal of Australia. It looks similar to the ostrich and belongs to the genus of ratite birds. Even though the emu can get up to 40 kg, it can reach a top speed of approximately 65 km/h.One of its nearer relatives is the highly endangered Cassowary, which only occurs in some rain forests of Nordqueensland. We made a closer acquaintance with one of these nearly 1.8 metres large animals, since we disturbed a male and its hatchling (here the males take over the breeding care). Because of this the Cassowary father strechted out its neck and started to hurtle to us. However, as we betook ourself to flight, he desisted from hunting us. ![]() Often there are domestic animals at Roadhouses like this emus at the Bark Hut Inn |
